The Enterprise published its first issue on August 10, 1887. Owner U.S.G. Blakely acted as publisher, editor, reporter, typesetter, printer, advertising manager and paper boy, keeping the residents and businesses informed of community happenings.
Obviously, much about The Enterprise has changed, but much has remained the same – including the staff’s commitment to provide the community with solid, fair and accurate coverage of the Plainfield area.
Every weekly issue is filled with news and information about local schools, government, business, churches, sports, information important to those who live and work in Plainfield.
In recent years, in addition to The Enterprise, the paper has expanded to publish and deliver the Plainfield Advantage and the Shorewood Sentinel to more than 50,000 homes and businesses every week. These community newspapers offer residents and businesses of Shorewood a taste of what Plainfield has enjoyed for generations.
Wayne Perry, who purchased the newspaper in 1985, was a strong believer in community and providing readers timely news and important information about their hometown, as well as advertising messages from local businesses. The Perry family continues to own and operate Enterprise Publications, as well as to carry on the strong community principles which Wayne instilled.
By the time you leaf through the stories, photos, and ads – The Enterprise staff is well on its way to the next issue – just as U.S.G. Blakely did more than a century ago.
